Why Professional Pool Leak Detection Beats Guesswork
Once you’ve confirmed your pool is losing more water than evaporation explains, the next question is where the water is actually going. This is where a lot of pool owners either start guessing — patching a crack that turns out not to be the source, or draining and refilling repeatedly hoping the problem fixes itself — or decide to just live with topping off the water every few days. Neither approach solves anything, and both usually end up costing more than proper diagnosis would have.
Why guessing doesn’t work
Pools lose water for a range of reasons, and most of them aren’t visible from the deck:
- Structural cracks in the shell, which can be hairline and hard to spot without pressure testing
- Plumbing leaks in suction or return lines, often underground and nowhere near where the water is surfacing
- Skimmer or light niche leaks, where fittings degrade around penetrations in the pool wall
- Equipment pad leaks, at pump seals, valves, or unions, that only leak under pressure
A crack you can see isn’t necessarily the crack that’s leaking, and a leak’s above-ground symptoms (a wet spot in the yard, a damp patch near the equipment pad) don’t always sit directly above its source — water travels through soil before it surfaces. Patching the wrong thing means spending money and still having the same problem.
What professional leak detection actually involves
Rather than guessing from visible symptoms, proper leak detection isolates the system to find out where pressure is actually being lost:
- Pressure testing the plumbing lines individually to identify which line (if any) is leaking, rather than assuming it’s the pool shell
- Dye testing around suspect areas — fittings, cracks, lights, skimmers — to visually confirm where water is escaping
- Isolating the pool shell from the equipment to determine whether the loss is structural or mechanical
- Checking equipment pad components — pump seals, valves, heater connections — since equipment leaks are often mistaken for shell or plumbing leaks
This process finds the actual source instead of the most convenient guess, which matters because the fix is completely different depending on what’s actually wrong — a $200 fitting repair versus excavating a plumbing line versus a shell patch are not interchangeable, and doing the wrong one doesn’t stop the leak.
Why it’s worth doing properly, especially here
San Diego’s water costs make an ongoing leak more expensive here than in a lot of other places — a leak that’s easy to shrug off as “just topping it off every week” adds up steadily on the water bill for as long as it goes unaddressed. Beyond cost, an underground plumbing leak or a leak undermining the pool deck can cause structural damage that gets significantly more expensive the longer it runs unresolved.
